Dr. Namrata Vijayvergia shared insights about this research, which highlights how social support and healthier lifestyles associated with marriage could play a role in cancer prevention.

While the number of cancer deaths in the U.S. has been declining over the past few decades, some regions have not seen the same improvement. Research published in the British Journal of Cancer examined data from nearly 3,000 U.S. counties between 1981 and 2019. The research team, from Mississippi State and Oak Ridge National Laboratory, analyzed death certificates that included more than 21 million cancer-related deaths.

From 1991 to 2019, U.S. cancer deaths dropped by about 32%. However, not all areas benefitted equally. Urban, coastal counties with higher income levels experienced the most significant improvements, while rural and lower-income areas saw smaller declines in mortality.

Arthur G. Cosby, the lead author and a professor at Mississippi State, noted that the differences in health outcomes reflect the diversity of regions and communities across the U.S. By 2019, the highest-income counties saw a mortality improvement about seven times greater than that of the lowest-income counties.

The study found that major urban areas, especially along the East and West coasts, had some of the largest drops in cancer mortality, while rural areas lagged behind. Cosby remarked that the gap between these regions and income levels was more pronounced than expected.

Several factors may contribute to the overall decline in cancer deaths, such as reduced tobacco use, improved screenings, and better treatments. Cosby pointed to New York City’s rigorous tobacco control measures that have led to a 60% decrease in lung cancer rates since 1991.

Dr. Marc Siegel, a senior medical analyst, agreed that better preventive measures in urban areas have likely influenced this trend. He emphasized the role of early diagnosis and lifestyle changes in improving health outcomes.

While this study provides valuable insights, the authors noted some limitations. Variations in lifestyle and healthcare access may affect the results. Additionally, the accuracy of death certificates can pose challenges for research.

The findings underline a growing concern about disparities in cancer care across different regions. Researchers call for more investigations to understand these variations better and to ensure that improvements in cancer mortality benefit all populations.

As awareness and interventions to combat cancer continue to evolve, it’s crucial to address these discrepancies and work towards equitable health outcomes for everyone.

Marriage May Help Lower Cancer Risk, New Study Suggests A recent study suggests that being married might be linked to a lower risk of cancer.
