He made this statement during a press conference following a meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping in Beijing.

Lavrov emphasized, “The right to enrich uranium for civilian purposes is an inalienable right of the Islamic Republic of Iran,” as reported by the Times of Israel. This assertion comes amid contentious discussions between the U.S. and Iran regarding nuclear materials.

U.S. President Donald Trump has been firm on ensuring no uranium enrichment occurs in Iran, stating his administration’s goal is to remove all remaining nuclear materials from the country. In a previous post, he remarked that the U.S. would collaborate with Iran to eliminate its access to uranium.

Recently, U.S. Vice President JD Vance, who led negotiations with Iranian officials, reiterated this hardline stance. “We want the enriched uranium that the Iranians currently possess to leave their country,” he told Fox News.

Vance explained that the administration aims to remove all enriched uranium to prevent future concerns for subsequent U.S. presidents. He stated, “We would like to get that material out of the country completely so that the United States has control over it.”

In light of the ongoing talks, Lavrov’s statements present a counter to U.S. demands. He argued that countries like China and Russia reject what they see as American dominance over global policies. “Neither China nor Russia, nor the majority of countries throughout the world, can accept this approach,” Lavrov remarked.

The negotiations have faltered due to Iran’s unwillingness to abandon its nuclear program entirely, a situation that experts in nuclear policy deem concerning. Andrea Stricker, from the Foundation for Defense of Democracies, noted the importance of the U.S. walking away from talks once it became clear that Iran would not comply with key requirements.

Iran’s Right to Enrich Uranium Supported by Russia’s Lavrov During China Visit Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov asserted that Iran holds an “inalienable” right to enrich uranium for peaceful purposes.
