This increase follows the U.S. Navy’s decision to block ships traveling to and from Iran through the Strait of Hormuz, a move that could limit Iranian oil exports. The situation developed after lengthy negotiations between Washington and Tehran failed to produce a peace agreement.

Brent crude futures jumped by $6.96, or 7.3%, reaching $102.16 per barrel, while West Texas Intermediate climbed $8.12, or 8.4%, to $104.69 per barrel. These changes came after both benchmarks saw declines on Friday.

Market analysts suggest that conditions have reverted to what they were before the ceasefire, with the United States now poised to restrict up to 2 million barrels per day of oil linked to Iran. Saul Kavonic, the head of energy research at MST Marquee, commented on the shift in market dynamics.

President Donald Trump announced on Sunday that the U.S. Navy would initiate the blockade, intensifying an already fragile situation following unsuccessful peace talks with Iran. Trump indicated that high oil prices could persist through the upcoming midterm elections, acknowledging the potential political consequences of his administration’s military actions against Iran six weeks ago.

Priyanka Sachdeva, a senior analyst at Phillip Nova, noted that the threat alone has impacted market expectations, highlighting how susceptible oil prices are to geopolitical factors. She added that the rise in prices reflects growing concerns about the geopolitical climate.

U.S. Central Command has stated that the blockade would begin at 10 a.m. ET (1400 GMT) on Monday and would apply to all vessels regardless of their nationality, while still allowing for non-Iranian ships to pass freely through the Strait of Hormuz.

Experts like Tony Sycamore from IG explained that this blockade is likely to significantly disrupt Iranian oil exports, putting pressure on Tehran’s allies to lobby for reopening the waterway.

In response to the mounting tensions, Iran’s Revolutionary Guards warned that any military vessels approaching the Strait would be seen as a serious violation of the recent ceasefire and would face strong repercussions.

Despite the ongoing tension, data shows that three supertankers loaded with oil successfully passed through the Strait of Hormuz on Saturday, marking a significant moment as these were among the first vessels to leave the region since the ceasefire was announced last week. However, many oil tankers are now avoiding the Strait in anticipation of the looming U.S. blockade.

On a related note, Saudi Arabia has announced that it has restored its full oil pumping capacity through the East-West pipeline, with daily output reaching about 7 million barrels. This comes after assessments indicated damage to its energy sector from the conflict involving Iran.

Oil Prices Surge Amid U.S. Navy’s New Blockade on Iranian Shipping Oil prices rose above $100 a barrel on Monday as tensions escalated in the Middle East.
