The overuse and misuse of antibiotics are major factors contributing to this issue. In fact, the Eastern Mediterranean Region has the highest level of antibiotic use in the world, about 25% higher than the global average.

As World AMR Awareness Week (WAAW) 2024 comes to a close, the World Health Organization (WHO) is urging everyone—from governments to health professionals and individual community members—to “Educate. Advocate. Act Now” in the fight against AMR.

Raise Awareness

Education plays a crucial role in addressing AMR. It helps people understand the risks involved and the importance of using antibiotics responsibly. Ensuring that the public receives accurate information is essential, especially regarding how to use antibiotics correctly. For healthcare workers, WHO’s AWaRe (Access, Watch, Reserve) antibiotic guidelines offer clear and evidence-based recommendations on choosing the right antibiotic, determining the proper dose, and understanding how long treatment should continue.

Advocate for Change

There is a strong need for advocacy to prioritize AMR in public health discussions and community efforts. Collaborations among various stakeholders—including governments, researchers, and community organizations—can lead to effective programs designed to combat AMR. By working together, we can ensure that ample resources are directed toward research and the creation of innovative solutions.

Immediate Action is Essential

Time is of the essence. The final day of WAAW serves as a reminder that tackling AMR is everyone’s responsibility. Individuals and health professionals are encouraged to practice and promote responsible antibiotic prescribing. Additionally, governments are called upon to enhance water, sanitation, and hygiene practices, improve infection control measures, expand vaccination efforts, and allocate necessary resources for these initiatives.

Dr. Hanan Balkhy, WHO Regional Director for the Eastern Mediterranean, emphasized the need for collective action stating, “AMR knows no borders. Only through united efforts can we safeguard our health systems and economies.” She pointed out the significant commitments made by countries at various international gatherings and stressed the importance of transforming these promises into actionable steps on the ground.

Recent studies suggest that AMR could lead to 39 million deaths globally by 2050 and result in economic losses up to $3.4 trillion annually by 2030. Addressing AMR could prevent at least 90,000 deaths each year within the Eastern Mediterranean Region.

Understanding AMR

Antimicrobials—including antibiotics, antivirals, antifungals, and antiparasitics—are crucial for treating infections. However, AMR occurs when these medications become ineffective against certain bacteria, viruses, fungi, and parasites. As a result, infections become more difficult to control, increasing the risk of serious illness and death.

WHO has identified AMR as one of the top ten global public health threats. In September 2024, nations reaffirmed their commitment to fighting AMR during a high-level meeting at the United Nations General Assembly, setting specific goals for antibiotic use in healthcare.

The WHO Regional Office for the Eastern Mediterranean remains dedicated to helping countries execute strategies that stem from this political declaration.

For further resources on World AMR Awareness Week 2024, please visit the WHO’s dedicated page for information and support materials.

World AMR Awareness Week 2024 Highlights Urgent Need for Action 24 November 2024, Cairo, Egypt – Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) is becoming a significant concern for public health, economic stability, and development across the Eastern Mediterranean Region.
