He stated that many companies taking layoffs under the guise of artificial intelligence (AI) are actually using it as an excuse to address larger issues within their workforce.

Andreessen, who is a co-founder and partner at Andreessen Horowitz, pointed out that most large companies are significantly overstaffed. He claimed, “Every large company is overstaffed. Some are overstaffed by 25%, while others may be overstaffed by 50% or even 75%.”

He believes that the layoffs often associated with AI are really a response to the overhiring that happened during the pandemic. “This entire labor displacement narrative is completely wrong,” he asserted. Instead, he argued that AI is helping workers become more productive, with many programmers using AI to handle more tasks rather than losing their jobs.

Adding to Andreessen’s perspective, Aravind Srinivas, CEO of Perplexity AI, commented that the job cuts triggered by AI might also encourage employees to leave unfulfilling roles and explore new ventures powered by AI. He noted that while AI could lead to some job displacement, it also creates chances for people to learn new skills and start their own businesses.

Last week, tech entrepreneur Andrew Yang remarked that the rapid advancement of AI is changing the nature of work and even affecting the tax system. He mentioned that hiring has slowed down, with a notable increase in unemployment among recent college graduates compared to those without a degree.

Meanwhile, Meta Platforms, Inc. is embracing AI more aggressively. Under the guidance of Chief Technology Officer Andrew Bosworth, the company has initiated “AI For Work” to enhance workflows and support the development of AI tools. Bosworth highlighted the need for unified systems to help employees create efficient AI solutions, mentioning that CEO Mark Zuckerberg is also actively developing his own AI assistant for work.

These discussions reflect the ongoing changes in the job market and the role of AI in shaping the future of work.

Venture Capitalist Disputes AI-Related Layoffs Marc Andreessen, a well-known venture capitalist, shared his thoughts on job cuts during a recent discussion on the 20VC podcast.
