The remains, uncovered in 2020 in northeast Yakutia, Russia, are a significant find related to the Late Pleistocene period, which researchers note is "very rare" in the region.

The findings were detailed in a study published on November 14, 2024, in the journal Scientific Reports. Most similar discoveries in Russia have predominantly been located in the Indigirka River basin, enhancing the importance of this cub’s preservation.

The frozen remains have remained remarkably intact, including its soft dark brown fur. Researchers noted that the fur was thick and measured about 20–30 mm in length. They observed that the fur on the cub’s back and neck was longer than that on its legs, showcasing the unique characteristics of this ancient animal.

Completely preserved are the head, front arms, and paws of the cub, providing researchers with an incredible opportunity to study its anatomy. The cub is believed to have died when it was about three weeks old and has been identified as belonging to the species Homotherium latidens. This mummified specimen exhibits distinct differences from modern-day lion cubs, including a unique muzzle shape, large mouth, small ears, and a robust neck.

The study represents a first for paleontologists as they have now been able to examine the appearance of an extinct mammal with no modern equivalents. Researchers also investigated how this extinct species could thrive in extremely cold temperatures. They concluded that features such as large paws and the absence of carpal pads were likely crucial for navigating snowy terrain.

Recent years have seen other significant finds in Siberian permafrost. In 2021, for instance, a mummified wolf estimated to be over 44,000 years old was discovered, further illuminating the ancient ecosystems of the region.

This discovery serves as an exciting reminder of the prehistoric life that once roamed the Earth and highlights the continuous importance of paleontological research in understanding our planet’s history.

Rare Find: 35,000-Year-Old Mummified Saber-Toothed Cub Discovered in Siberia In a remarkable discovery, scientists have examined a mummified saber-toothed cub that has remained almost perfectly preserved for 35,000 years in Siberia’s permafrost.
