This initiative aims to make Paraguay a leader in the use of satellite data within the region. The project will feature state-of-the-art labs, specialized equipment, and training programs.

Launch of the Satellite Technology Centre

Recently, the Government of Paraguay inked a deal with Japan to kick off the “Project for the Development of Facilities Related to Satellite Technology.” This agreement was celebrated during a ceremony held at the Government Palace in Asunción.

The cooperation includes a substantial non-refundable grant of $24 million, which will go towards building a Centre for the Use of Space Technologies and acquiring specialized tools. The facility will be located on the grounds of the National University of Asunción. This four-story complex will house advanced laboratories like the Spaceslab and Geolab, operated by the Paraguayan Space Agency, as well as ground stations for receiving and processing satellite data.

Officials believe that these systems will create valuable Earth observation databases that can aid public policy and research efforts. The centre will be equipped with nanosatellite testing systems, thermo-vacuum chambers, and anechoic chambers. It will also include antennas designed for space research and satellite communications. This project builds upon Paraguay’s expanding space programme, especially after the success of the GuaraníSat-2 satellite, which passed crucial tests in Japan in 2025.

Building Bridges for Future Innovation

President Santiago Peña emphasized that this agreement showcases the strengthening ties between Paraguay and Japan. He said that the project is a direct outcome of his diplomatic visit to Japan.

Over the past year, a team of 14 Japanese consultants worked closely with Paraguayan engineers to design a facility that meets the country’s specific technological needs and development goals. Peña also mentioned that the centre will open up opportunities for young scientists and engineers, allowing them to contribute to global technological advancements without leaving Paraguay.

Osvaldo Almirón, the head of the Paraguayan Space Agency, highlighted that the organization will significantly benefit from this investment. However, he noted that the positive effects are expected to quickly reach other ministries, private companies, and academic institutions. Authorities are optimistic that the new centre will position Paraguay as a regional hub for satellite data and support the creation and operation of small satellites throughout Latin America.

Paraguay to Boost Tech with New Satellite Centre Paraguay is gearing up to enhance its technological capabilities by establishing a new satellite technology centre, thanks to support from Japan.
