The campaign aims to create awareness and spark conversations in communities about the significance of daughters and the urgent need to challenge harmful societal beliefs.

An analysis by the Office for National Statistics (ONS) reveals that between 2021 and 2025, about 118 boys are expected to be born for every 100 girls to Indian mothers in the UK. In contrast, the national average across all ethnic groups stands at around 105 boys for every 100 girls. Demographic experts consider ratios over 107 as potential signs of sex-selective practices.

Manish Tiwari, the founder of Here&Now365, stressed the importance of addressing these alarming statistics, stating that remaining silent is not an option. He emphasized that the role of communicators goes beyond brand promotion; it also involves highlighting critical social issues. The “The Missing” campaign seeks to confront harmful attitudes and affirm that girls deserve equal chances to be born and celebrated.

The campaign draws inspiration from Acharya Prashant, an Indian philosopher, whose views illuminate the negative societal impacts of preferring male children, which perpetuates sexism and patriarchy over generations.

This campaign follows Tiwari’s recent white paper, created in collaboration with the Aston India Centre at Aston University, showcasing the Indian community’s successes in the UK. While highlighting the community’s achievements, Tiwari noted that no group is without criticism, and harmful customs need to be tackled.

“The Missing” campaign specifically addresses the implications of gender disparities in birth ratios within segments of the Indian community in the UK. It frames these statistics as indicative of a more profound issue, with a strong preference for male offspring reinforcing societal norms that contribute to sexism.

Concerns about sex-selective abortions have prompted discussions among policymakers and advocates in the UK. Labour MP Virendra Sharma, speaking to the BBC Asian Network, pointed out that such practices should not be regarded as cultural or religious. He emphasized the need to support women facing societal pressures during pregnancy, ensuring they have proper access to resources and legal options. Notably, sex-based abortions are illegal in the UK, as confirmed by the Department of Health and Social Care.

The campaign seeks to shed light on the urgent need to address gender imbalances and promote a society where both boys and girls are valued equally. Through raising awareness and encouraging discussions, “The Missing” hopes to foster a cultural shift that acknowledges the worth of every child, regardless of gender.

Campaign Highlights Gender Imbalance in Birth Ratios Among Indian Families in the UK A media and marketing agency from London, Here&Now365, has launched a new campaign called “The Missing.” This initiative focuses on the concerning gender imbalance in birth ratios among Indian-origin families living in the UK.
