After the reported death of prominent cartel leader Nemesio Oseguera, known as El Mencho, American tourists in Puerto Vallarta experienced sudden chaos and violence. Many travelers described feeling trapped amid rising tensions and violent acts as local authorities struggled to regain control.<\/p>\n
Major airlines began canceling flights, and tourists received orders to shelter in place, with reports of fires, blocked roads, and looting creating a scene reminiscent of a battlefield.<\/p>\n
Eugene Marchenko, a 37-year-old visitor from Charleston, South Carolina, shared that he and his wife were forced to abandon their Airbnb when they awoke to the sound of horns and saw several cars ablaze just outside. They had only arrived in Mexico the day before.<\/p>\n
“I looked down and saw six cars on fire, including a fuel tanker,” Marchenko recalled. He witnessed alleged cartel members instructing motorists to leave their vehicles before setting them alight.<\/p>\n
After several hours of evacuation, he ventured out to find food, only to see pharmacies and shops destroyed, with younger people looting beer and cigarettes.<\/p>\n
Videos captured a helicopter flying overhead while armed forces patrolled the streets below. Marchenko noted that local public transportation had come to a standstill, leaving him uncertain about how he and other tourists could reach the airport if flights resumed.<\/p>\n
Still, he observed that most people remained calm and just frustrated. “There’s definitely not any panic,” said Marchenko. “Most people seemed annoyed rather than scared.”<\/p>\n
Adriana Belli, a 49-year-old visitor from Miami, was also affected. Planning to attend a wedding and celebrate a friend’s birthday, she found the sudden violence surprising, especially when friends who had visited for years claimed Puerto Vallarta was safe.<\/p>\n
Guests at her resort faced food shortages, with those who made it to the airport now confined there with very little to eat. “They’re just surviving off granola bars,” she mentioned.<\/p>\n
Another traveler shared similar concerns, noting that restaurant service had shut down, and guests were limited to what’s left in the lobby. With this being their first trip without their young child, he mentioned feeling anxious enough to discuss their will with family back home.<\/p>\n
Despite the fear and uncertainty, travelers remained hopeful that order would be restored soon.
