Rising costs in housing, childcare, transportation, and everyday services have made life increasingly difficult for many. This is why Mayor Mamdani’s focus on making New York more affordable struck a chord with voters.

In a bid to tackle these financial challenges, the mayor announced a new initiative requiring every city agency to appoint a chief savings officer. This officer will have a 45-day timeline to explore ways to save money.

At Tech:NYC, we believe this approach is crucial. We understand that technology can play a vital role in meeting these affordability goals. When used wisely, tech can help reduce costs, simplify services, and enhance the support offered to citizens.

With the recent appointment of Lisa Gelobter as the new chief technology officer, there’s a real chance to use technology in a smart and effective way to make life easier for New Yorkers. We’ve seen successful technology rollouts, like the MTA’s new “tap to pay” system, which has made commuting smoother for millions.

However, we’ve also seen technology fail, as was the case with the citywide AI chatbot introduced by the Adams administration. This tool often provided inaccurate information and left residents frustrated rather than assisted. The decision to scrap the chatbot was necessary, but it should be just the beginning of a larger effort to create a more responsive city government.

The issue isn’t technology itself but rather how it’s implemented. Simply removing ineffective digital tools instead of improving them means missing out on valuable opportunities to enhance services and cut costs for the many New Yorkers who depend on them. With chief savings officers now on board, there’s an urgency to make this progress.

Efforts are already underway. Through Tech:NYC’s Decoded Futures program, nonprofits are receiving free training in leveraging AI to boost their impact. We’ve observed firsthand how effective the combination of AI and digital tools can be for community organizations.

For instance, NY Sun Works, which sets up hydroponic gardens in public schools to teach sustainability, faced challenges with its supply logistics. By participating in Decoded Futures, they developed a real-time tracking system for deliveries across over 350 schools. This resulted in fewer lost shipments and decreased staff time on logistics, all while enabling program growth without extra costs.

Mayor Mamdani’s focus on affordability is commendable, and the next step is to integrate technology into this vision. New York possesses the talent and determination to create a government that works effectively and remains affordable. With the right use of technology, we can reduce costs and improve the essential services that New Yorkers rely on every day.

New York’s Affordability Crisis: An Opportunity for Change The question of affordability is front and center across the United States, and New Yorkers feel it acutely.
