The artistic director of the Docaviv international documentary film festival, she shared her family’s harrowing experiences as tensions rise in the region.

“We’ve had our bags ready for a long time,” Weits explained. “Three weeks ago, there were rumors about a possible U.S. attack on Iran. We even moved the kids to the safer north.”

During a recent conflict, Weits’s home was struck by an Iranian missile, collapsing their safe room while she, her husband, and their two children were inside. “After the missile hit and we lost everything, we also lost our sense of safety,” she remarked. “Now, we do what we can to prepare.”

Her life has seen surreal moments. Just days after the missile attack, while recovering in the hospital, she received news that she had won an Emmy Award for a documentary about a recent tragedy. “It felt surreal—one day, I’m dealing with trauma, and four days later, I’m celebrating,” she noted.

Weits emphasized that life in Israel continues despite the fear. “Kids are still going to school and families are making plans for celebrations, but there’s an underlying uncertainty,” she said. “We didn’t plan anything for this weekend because we really don’t know what could happen.”

Amid this environment, the general public is wrestling with anxiety over potential military action against Iran. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has ordered security services to prepare for any escalation, with forces on high alert. He warned, “If Tehran attacks us, they will face consequences they cannot imagine.”

Israeli military officials also assured the public of their preparedness. “We are watching regional events closely and are ready for any changes in the situation,” said IDF Spokesperson Brig. Gen. Effie Defrin.

The striking difference between past conflicts with Hamas and the recent missile strikes from Iran has heightened fear. “The level of destruction is unprecedented for many Israelis,” said Iranian analyst Benny Sabti. “The heavy missiles caused significant damage, and the traditional Iron Dome defense system was less effective.”

Yet, Sabti believes Israel is better equipped now than in the past. “There are facts and feelings. The country has taken significant steps to ensure better readiness,” he said.

Israeli citizens are not just anxious; they are also learning to live with this new reality. Weits stated, “There is no more feeling of complacency. The idea of ‘it won’t happen to me’ is gone.”

As celebrations for the Jewish holiday of Purim approach amidst the fear, one question remains: how will international decisions impact everyday life in Israel? Many hope for peace, yearning for a return to normalcy in a region rife with uncertainty.

Israelis Face New Realities Amid Conflict with Iran In Tel Aviv, Michal Weits has kept bags packed near her front door for weeks.
