As she stands beside an echocardiogram machine at the center, she reflects on the meaningful work that has helped countless individuals in need.

Quillen highlights a painting by local artist Dave Barnhouse that symbolizes hope for the many who have relied on the free health clinic since it opened its doors in 2008. Originally located on North Fourth Street, the center now thrives at 423 South Street and has successfully handled over 30,000 patient visits, providing critical care to those who may have otherwise gone without it.

“In just the past year, we’ve offered $1.7 million in free medical services, which includes thousands of patient visits and prescription medications,” Quillen explains. She points out that many of these patients came from Jefferson County and beyond, often without insurance coverage.

This isn’t Quillen’s first retirement; she initially stepped down in 2015 but returned in 2020 when the pandemic created a significant need for leadership in the nonprofit sector. “COVID really impacted organizations like ours. Although we never stopped providing services, we did face challenges,” she said.

Quillen was first brought to the health center by Rev. Bruce Hitchcock, who believed her nursing background made her the perfect fit for the job after she took time off to raise her family.

Having spent 35 years in the Ohio Valley, Quillen credits her success to teamwork. She works closely with a dedicated staff, including long-time administrative assistant Connie Buydasz, medical volunteers, and a team of office helpers who tackle various tasks essential to the clinic’s operation.

“Each role is vital, whether glamorous or not,” Quillen notes, emphasizing the importance of the volunteer engagement that financially supports the center, including a gala that typically raises over $50,000 each year.

Under her leadership, the clinic has added specialized equipment, like an echocardiogram machine, enabling staff to better diagnose and treat conditions that could lead to severe health issues. Funded by local foundations, this equipment is often out of reach for uninsured patients.

Quillen also sheds light on the health disparities faced by local minority communities, stating that Black men are 70% more likely to develop prostate cancer, and Black women have a 40% higher likelihood of dying from breast cancer. Early detection can be life-saving, and the clinic plays a crucial role in providing those services to those who may not seek care due to financial constraints.

Reflecting on her journey, Quillen describes her time at the center as an unexpected but fulfilling calling. “I never anticipated leading a health clinic, but it’s been the best nursing job I never knew I wanted,” she shares passionately.

As she prepares to leave, Quillen believes it’s essential for leaders to know when to step aside for new ideas. “It’s been a blessing to serve as the director. I truly feel honored,” she says, looking back at her impactful years.

The board is now seeking a new director, with applications due by March 20. Quillen hopes her successor will bring fresh energy to the Ohio Valley Health Center, continuing its mission to serve the community.

Community Health Advocate Steps Down STEUBENVILLE — Ann Quillen, the executive director of the Ohio Valley Health Center, is preparing to leave her role after years of dedicated service.
