On Friday, the US Treasury Department announced two general licenses aimed at allowing global energy companies to restart their oil and gas operations in Venezuela, an OPEC member, and enabling other businesses to negotiate new energy investments.<\/p>\n<p>One of the licenses permits major companies like Chevron, BP, Eni, Shell, and Repsol to resume their operations in Venezuela. These firms still maintain offices in the country. However, the resumption comes with a requirement that payments for royalties and taxes be funneled through the US-controlled Foreign Government Deposit Fund.<\/p>\n<p>The second license allows companies worldwide to make contracts with Venezuela&#8217;s state oil company, PDVSA, for new investments in the oil and gas sector.
