Originally launched in December, this initiative aims to temporarily hire skilled tech workers to address important technological issues across government agencies. Those interested now have until February 2 to apply, with OPM hoping to recruit 1,000 individuals for the program by March.

So far, it’s unclear how many applications have been submitted, but OPM Director Scott Kupor mentioned that over 35,000 people have shown interest. At a recent event, he expressed enthusiasm about the response: “The interest is phenomenal,” he said.

This federal tech recruitment program takes a unique approach by not requiring candidates to hold a college degree, making it more accessible for early-career talent. Kupor highlighted the urgency of filling tech positions due to a wave of retirements expected over the next decade, stressing the importance of nurturing new talent to combat this pending issue.

The government’s focus has been on increasing early-career staffing, which has seen a decline recently, partly due to workforce reduction efforts from the previous administration. Currently, only 7.9% of federal employees are under 30, down from 8.9% the previous year. In contrast, about 41% are over 50 years old, with 13.5% eligible to retire.

Kupor noted that many young tech-savvy workers were lost recently, emphasizing the need for a diverse, generationally balanced workforce. He explained that the Tech Force program could help create a flexible career path for tech professionals, allowing them to navigate between government and private sector roles without making a lifelong commitment right away.

In addition to the initial cohort of 1,000 members, Kupor expressed interest in expanding the initiative to include other fields such as HR and finance. To attract talent, OPM is partnering with private companies and the NobleReach Foundation, which supports STEM education for public service. This collaboration aims to connect agencies with recruits specializing in areas like AI and cybersecurity.

NobleReach CEO Arun Gupta shared thoughts on the changing career landscape: “The way people think about their careers is shifting. We want to encourage individuals to celebrate both staying in public service and pursuing other opportunities,” he stated.

The Tech Force initiative is one in a series of government efforts to recruit tech talent in short-term programs, following previous initiatives like the U.S. Digital Service. However, some experts, like Max Stier, have voiced concerns about past program closures, arguing that reintegrating tech talent into the existing workforce is crucial for long-term success.

Stier highlighted that blending temporary Tech Force workers with current employees can enhance the government’s technological advancements. He stressed, “Significant improvement requires investing in existing staff, who have essential knowledge about both their work and government operations.”

This new move by OPM aims not only to address immediate tech needs but also to create a sustainable pipeline of talent for the future.

The Office of Personnel Management (OPM) has announced an extension for applications to the U.S. Tech Force program, citing a significant increase in interest and a spike in applications.
