The event, scheduled to start at 2 PM at Gautam Buddh University, was set to be a historic occasion, with both men’s and women’s championships held together for the first time. However, the excitement quickly turned into disappointment as athletes discovered that the competition rings had not been set up.

Reports indicate that only one of the three planned rings was partially assembled by 4 PM. Compounding the situation, that same ring had to be taken apart and reconstructed due to technical difficulties. The competition eventually began at 6:30 PM, but only the men’s matches kicked off after the lengthy wait.

Pramod Kumar, the secretary general of the Boxing Federation of India, addressed the situation, citing “logistical issues” as the cause of the delay. An insider mentioned that some vendors had not received payment, leading to a slow start; work began only after the situation was resolved. Additionally, it was noted that there were no sponsors for the tournament.

By 8 PM, there were still no updates on the women’s matches, and the construction of a third ring remained incomplete. The opening day was supposed to feature 80 bouts, with 42 in the men’s category and 38 in the women’s; however, due to the delays, many of these matches are likely to be postponed until the following day.

The athletes experienced the most distress from the delays. For example, Meenakshi Hooda, the reigning world champion in the 48kg category, was seen trying to rest on a yoga mat as she waited. Coaches expressed concerns that the prolonged delay could hinder the boxers’ recovery, especially since many were cutting weight. One coach mentioned that some boxers had not eaten since breakfast, as they were prepared for early bouts. “You can’t fight on a full stomach, but this uncertainty increases the risk of injury,” the coach added.

With more than 600 boxers competing across ten weight classes, the stakes are high, as medalists will earn spots in the national camp for upcoming events like the Commonwealth Games and Asian Games. Following a rocky start, organizers are now tasked with ensuring the rest of the tournament runs more smoothly.

National Boxing Championship Faces Major Delays The National Boxing Championship’s opening day in Greater Noida was far from smooth, with significant delays causing frustration among boxers, coaches, and officials.
