This spike is largely due to tariffs imposed during the previous administration, which has tightened budgets for families, according to reports.

A study highlighted by Al Jazeera noted that a 50% tariff on Indian imports has severely affected sales, causing shipments to the US to drop by as much as 40%. However, Indian exporters are now exploring new markets and finding success elsewhere.

One trader based in Denver, originally from Kolkata, mentioned that their monthly grocery bill has increased from $500 to $900 since the pandemic began, specifically noting the rising costs of foxnuts.

Despite these challenges, there are signs of optimism. Indian foxnuts are gaining traction in new markets such as Spain and South Africa, fueled by the Indian community abroad and an increasing recognition of the health benefits that foxnuts offer.

In the 2024-25 period, India shipped out roughly 800 metric tonnes of foxnuts to various countries, including the US, Germany, China, and nations in the Middle East, with half of those exports going to the US.

Satyajit Singh, head of Shakti Sudha Agro Ventures, which is a major player in the export of foxnuts, noted that there are significant opportunities ahead as the sector remains in its early stages. He emphasized the need for more awareness both within India and internationally.

In a move to support the industry, the Indian government recently set up a Makhana Board with an initial investment of Rs 1 billion. This initiative aims to improve the production process, ensure quality, and streamline exports.

India leads the world in foxnut production, contributing nearly 80% of the global output. Bihar is the main producer, responsible for about 85% of the country’s supply, with Darbhanga emerging as a key area for both cultivation and processing.

Rising Prices of Foxnuts Impact US Households New Delhi, Dec 26 – The price of a 25-gram pack of foxnuts, also known as Makhana, has surged from $2 to $4 in the United States recently.
