The atmosphere was lively as community members performed traditional folk dances from 11 different Indian states, showcasing the country’s rich cultural tapestry to an international audience.

The short cultural event, titled “Rhythms of a United India,” featured vibrant performances representing states such as Kerala, Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Maharashtra, Gujarat, Odisha, West Bengal, Assam, Bihar, Jharkhand, and Rajasthan. Modi expressed his admiration for the performances, emphasizing that they beautifully highlight India’s unity and diversity, as well as the diaspora’s strong connection to their heritage. He shared his thoughts on social media, praising the Indian community for maintaining their ties to their roots.

Later, after checking into his hotel, Modi enjoyed a special musical performance inspired by the holy Ganga river. Tamil folk singer Kumari Ambigay treated the audience to a rendition of the “Ganga Maiya” song, originally a Bhojpuri piece, which she adapted into Tamil for the occasion. She expressed her joy after meeting Modi for the first time, highlighting the sentimental nature of the performance.

Reflecting on the experience, Modi conveyed that it was both joyful and emotional. He noted that the song represents the hope and resilience of those early Indian settlers in South Africa, stating that witnessing such a connection to culture remains important today.

Also present at the event were winners of the Bharat Ko Janiye (Know India) Quiz, an initiative designed to enhance the Indian diaspora’s understanding of their ancestral heritage.
