The morale at our school is quite low,” she said. Teachers and staff at military schools abroad are facing significant challenges, as they are not being compensated during this shutdown.

The Department of Defense Education Activity (DoDEA), which oversees 161 schools in various countries, serves nearly 67,000 students connected to military families. Over 14,000 employees work hard to provide education but are now working without pay. Jessica Tackaberry, a spokesperson for DoDEA, acknowledged the difficulties faced by these dedicated educators, stating that they are closely monitoring the situation to offer necessary support.

In light of the shutdown, many teachers are unable to take additional jobs to make ends meet. Irwin feels fortunate that her husband, who serves in the Navy, continues to receive a paycheck, but their budget is tight. “Even when things get back to normal, repayment could take a while,” she explained.

The unique situation for many Americans living abroad adds to their stress. With contracts often limiting outside employment, some educators are left to navigate financial struggles alone, explaining their challenges to landlords and managing unpaid bills.

As the situation drags on, many teachers find themselves funding school supplies out of their own pockets. Irwin, who works in special education, has been buying materials for students, sharing, “I’ve had to purchase items myself because I want to make sure my students have what they need.”

Many educators are committed to their students, ensuring that learning continues even in tough times. Irwin expressed sadness seeing her students worry about their meals and well-being, stating, “It’s tough when they don’t fully grasp the situation, yet feel the effects.”

As military families navigate the challenges of the shutdown, the resilience of these educators remains strong, committed to supporting their students despite financial hardships.

Effects of Government Shutdown Felt by Educators Overseas As the government shutdown continues in Washington D.C., its impact is being felt far and wide, including on military bases outside the U.S. While some service members, like those in the military, are still receiving pay, many supporting staff, such as teachers and other educators, are struggling.

[29
7157,23279,19795,25882,25883
post-20589","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","category-world-news","tag-education","tag-government-shutdown","tag-military","tag-military-families","tag-teachers
["GET
