This situation is also seen as a threat to the stability of the Iranian government and its nuclear ambitions.

Kaveh Madani, a leading environmental expert and director at the United Nations University Institute for Water, Environment and Health, has labeled Iran’s situation as a “water bankruptcy.” He explained that this crisis significantly hampers the country’s functioning and weakens its global standing. Madani remarked that if Iran aims to maintain its ideological stance against the West, it must utilize its dwindling natural resources, more so in a time of water scarcity.

Madani pointed out that this crisis has been a long time in the making. “This water bankruptcy didn’t just happen overnight. We’ve been warning the government for years,” he stated, highlighting the ongoing environmental issues that have led to the current state.

Iran’s President, Masoud Pezeshkian, echoed these concerns, suggesting that without substantial rainfall soon, parts of Tehran might need to evacuate. Reports indicate that one of the five main dams supplying the city is already dry, while another is functioning at less than 8% capacity.

Energy Minister Abbas Alibadi revealed that authorities might implement evening water cuts to help refill reservoirs. He urged citizens to reduce water consumption by 20% to prevent rationing. “The signs were there, and now the reality is unmistakable. We’re talking about a Day Zero scenario when Tehran and other cities might run out of water,” Madani warned.

Madani emphasized that Iran’s decades-long mismanagement of resources, compounded by climate change, has led the country into this dire water crisis. He expressed concern that the collapse of basic utilities could lead to unrest, affecting national security and stirring discontent among the population.

Furthermore, Madani mentioned that ongoing water and electricity shortages could disrupt Iran’s nuclear program, despite assertions that airstrikes have damaged its nuclear facilities.

As the government grapples with these challenges, the likelihood of Tehran’s evacuation remains low. Madani believes that practical factors like jobs and children in schools create barriers to immediate action. He concluded by stating that being in “resistance mode” only exacerbates pressures on Iran’s natural resources and increases fears around food security and reliance on imports.

Iran Faces Severe Drought Crisis Iran is currently experiencing one of its worst droughts in many years, causing serious concerns for its capital, Tehran, where some officials are hinting at potential evacuations.
