This is a rise from 50 cases last year and 42 in 2023. Meanwhile, Riverside County has reported 22 rabid bats this year, up from 15 the previous year.

Barbara Cole, director of disease control at Riverside University Health System, emphasizes that while the increase is concerning, there is no need for alarm. She advises people to be cautious and avoid interactions with bats, noting, “Bats might be fun as Halloween costumes, but it’s unsafe to handle them in real life.”

Understanding Rabies Risks

Rabies is a deadly disease for humans, usually fatal once symptoms appear. Jennifer Chevinsky, the public health officer for Riverside County, stated that while rabies cases in humans are rare in California, bat bites can be a serious risk. “Bites from a bat can be painless and may not leave marks, so it’s crucial to seek immediate medical help if you find a bat in your home,” she said.

Orange County Update

In Orange County, the number of rabid bats reported has remained consistent with last year’s figures. Up to October, 13 bats were confirmed to have rabies, including one found on a sidewalk in Orange just two weeks ago. Most cases originated in South Orange County, reflecting trends from previous years.

Reporting Rabid Bats

Residents in different counties can take action if they encounter bats:

Los Angeles County: You can report animal bites or bat encounters to Veterinary Public Health at (213) 288-7060 or via email at vet@ph.lacounty.gov.

Orange County: OC Animal Care can be reached at (714) 935-6848 for reports of bats or animal bites.

Riverside County: Call disease control at (951) 358-5107 for inquiries and local support.

Keeping People and Pets Safe

Cole also mentioned a rise in bat interactions with people in Riverside County, highlighting the importance of taking precautions. Bats can enter homes through small openings and have even been spotted near schools. Residents should avoid touching bats and seal any gaps in their homes to prevent entry.

If you come across a bat, steer clear, especially if it appears unable to fly or is active during the day, as these signs may indicate illness.

Watch for Symptoms in Pets

If a pet contracts rabies, symptoms can take days or even months to manifest. According to Amy Raines, chief veterinarian for Riverside County, signs to look out for in dogs and cats include:

Increased aggression or irritability

Mild fever

Coordination difficulties

Excessive drooling

Paralysis in the throat or jaw

Raines advises against feeding or touching wild animals and emphasizes the importance of getting pets vaccinated against rabies. Regular vaccinations help protect both pets and their owners from this serious disease.

Rise in Rabid Bats Raises Concerns in Southern California Recent reports show a significant increase in the number of bats testing positive for rabies in Los Angeles and Riverside counties this year, as highlighted by public health officials.
