Health officials are alerting the public following two cases of Legionnaires’ disease connected to a nursing home in the Chicago region. The local facility, Alden Valley Ridge Rehabilitation and Health Center, has been identified as the source of these cases.<\/p>\n
The Illinois Department of Public Health reported the first case emerged in early September and was traced back to this Bloomingdale nursing home. During environmental inspections, Legionella bacteria\u2014responsible for Legionnaires’ disease\u2014was found in both the building\u2019s cooling tower and a patient\u2019s room.<\/p>\n
As a precaution, the Alden Valley Ridge center has implemented water usage restrictions and has informed residents, their families, and staff members of the situation. Judy Kauerauf from the Illinois Department of Public Health emphasized their commitment to working with the facility to identify and eliminate any potential sources of the infection.<\/p>\n
People who have visited the nursing home or been within two miles of it over the past month are advised to monitor for symptoms such as cough, shortness of breath, headaches, muscle aches, or fever. While the disease is not contagious from person to person, it can be severe, with a fatality rate of about 10%. Fortunately, both individuals who contracted the illness in this incident have recovered.<\/p>\n
The Illinois health department points out that certain groups, including older adults, smokers, and those with weakened immune systems or chronic health conditions, are at the highest risk. This year, nearly 300 cases of Legionnaires’ disease have been reported across Illinois, with the number typically rising during the warm summer months when the bacteria thrive.<\/p>\n
Dr. Santina J. Wheat of Northwestern Medicine explained that while many may be exposed to the bacteria without showing symptoms, others could develop serious pneumonia requiring hospitalization.<\/p>\n
In response to the current situation, Alden Valley Ridge stated that they are following all recommended guidelines from health authorities and will continue to cooperate closely to ensure the safety of their residents and the surrounding community.
