This raises the question: how can such massive investments occur when the returns on these investments currently seem quite small?

Spending on AI is skyrocketing globally, with projections suggesting it could hit around $1.5 trillion by 2025. By 2026, this figure may exceed $2 trillion, accounting for nearly 2% of the world’s GDP. Despite the lack of immediate financial returns, the momentum behind the AI revolution shows no signs of slowing down.

Denis Barrier, the head of Cathay Innovation, emphasized that investors see AI as a groundbreaking technology, comparable to the discovery of electricity. He stated that the focus in Silicon Valley is on seizing opportunities rather than worrying about potential risks.

The urgency in investments is also fueled by global geopolitical tensions, which are pushing companies to build vast data centers filled with expensive chips that demand a lot of energy and require significant cooling systems.

According to a report from Stanford University, from 2013 to 2024, private investments in AI in the U.S. totaled $470 billion, with nearly a quarter of that amount coming in the last year alone. China’s investments stand at around $119 billion, making AI a hotbed for global competition.

While only a few companies are capturing the bulk of these investments, OpenAI is at the forefront. In March 2025, the organization behind ChatGPT raised about $40 billion, putting its estimated value around $300 billion. This staggering success has made OpenAI the most valuable company in the world, surpassing SpaceX, which is estimated at $500 billion.

CEO Sam Altman’s company plays a crucial role in the AI investment boom, overseeing the Stargate project, which aims to funnel $400 billion of the total $500 billion planned for Texas data centers by 2029.

This initiative has the backing of major companies like Softbank, Oracle, Microsoft, and Nvidia. Interestingly, Nvidia has been involved in over 50 venture capital deals recently but has faced criticism for investing in startups that primarily return to buy its chips, a practice some see as potentially inflating the market.

Concerns about overvaluation are growing, and analysts warn that such practices could lead to troubling implications, as seen with OpenAI’s latest substantial deal.

In the first half of 2025, OpenAI reportedly generated around $4.3 billion in revenue, as reported by industry outlet The Information. Unlike tech giants like Meta or Google, which have large cash reserves, OpenAI and its rivals must find creative funding solutions to stay afloat.

For supporters of AI, it’s just a matter of time before revenue streams explode for these companies, especially since ChatGPT has attracted 700 million users in under three years.

However, uncertainties remain. The cost of powering AI could reach up to $500 billion annually in global data center investments through 2030. To keep up with these expenses, the industry may need about $2 trillion in annual revenues. Yet, even under the best scenarios, estimates suggest there could be an $800 billion shortfall in the AI sector.

OpenAI plans to spend over $100 billion by 2029, which means profitability might still be a distant goal for some time. Moreover, the energy demand for AI’s global computing could rise to 200 gigawatts by 2030, equivalent to Brazil’s total electricity consumption, with half coming from the U.S.

Despite these daunting projections, many experts remain hopeful. They liken the current AI landscape to the internet boom of the mid-1990s, asserting that, while there will be failures along the way, the AI industry is set to endure and thrive, much like the internet did after its own tumultuous period.

Huge Investments Fuel AI Growth Recently, Nvidia, a major player in the AI chip market, made headlines by announcing a stunning investment of $100 billion to assist OpenAI, a leader in generative AI, in building new data centers.
