Captured by a live microphone, their conversation suggested that advancements in organ transplants might allow people to live to 150 years old.

As they walked alongside North Korea’s Kim Jong Un at the event marking the 80th anniversary of the end of World War II, Putin’s interpreter noted that “biotechnology is continuously developing.” Putin further explained that “human organs can be continuously transplanted,” suggesting that longer life could even lead to “immortality.” Xi, who wasn’t visible at the moment, chimed in with predictions about humans potentially reaching 150 in this century.

However, Dr. James Markmann, a respected U.S. transplant surgeon and member of the American Society of Transplant Surgeons, dismissed their claims as lacking scientific backing. He emphasized that while organ transplants are vital for patients facing organ failure, there is no evidence to support the idea that they can lead to immortality or that people could realistically live to be 150 solely through transplants.

Putin later acknowledged to reporters that he and Xi had indeed been discussing the science of longevity and possible medical advancements. This topic isn’t new for Putin, who previously launched a state-sponsored research institute aimed at exploring cellular rejuvenation and organ regeneration. His daughter, Maria Vorontsova, has also received funding for research in cell renewal and genetics.

Xi’s focus has been less direct regarding longevity but he has promoted biotechnology as a key aspect of China’s economic strategy.

Dr. Markmann concluded his commentary by highlighting a pressing issue: over 100,000 people in the U.S. are currently awaiting lifesaving organ transplants. He remarked that the real concern lies not in discussions of immortality, but in ensuring fair access to lifesaving organs for those in need.

Putin and Xi’s Remarks on Longevity Spark Controversy During a recent military parade in Beijing, Russian President Vladimir Putin and Chinese leader Xi Jinping made curious comments about organ transplants that stirred discussion.
