This initiative, known as Navajo Sun Power!, is funded by NTEC alongside a grant from the U.S. Department of Energy’s Office of Clean Energy Demonstrations. The inaugural installation occurred at a remote hogan in the Oljato Chapter, an area where over 13,000 homes currently lack access to the electrical grid.

These solar systems are crucial for those families living in some of the most isolated areas of the Navajo Nation, with many expected to remain off the grid for the next three to five years. Oljato Chapter President Willis Begay described solar power as a “wellspring of hope” for the community. He emphasized that having reliable electricity can transform lives, particularly for those with health needs, as it allows for proper storage of essential medications like insulin.

The Navajo Sun Power! initiative began in 2020 and has already seen the installation of 35 solar systems valued at about $850,000. With the recent expansion of the program, NTEC plans to add 125 more systems, distributed across various Navajo agencies. In May 2024, the Office of Clean Energy Demonstrations awarded NTEC $2.6 million to support 75 installations over the next five years, while NTEC will finance the rest. Each solar installation covers all costs, including the panels, batteries, installation, and safety compliance, along with training for homeowners on how to maintain their systems.

This program promises to significantly improve living conditions for families on the Navajo Nation, paving the way for a brighter future.

First Solar Installations Launch on Navajo Nation The Navajo Transitional Energy Company (NTEC) has announced the successful installation of the first solar home systems as part of a larger project aimed at bringing solar power to the Navajo Nation.
