A 43-year-old man from Valencia County was hospitalized but has since been released, according to a press release dated August 25.

Health officials believe the man might have been exposed to the plague while camping in Rio Arriba County. Erin Phipps, the state public health veterinarian for NMDOH, emphasized the serious nature of this ancient disease and the importance of community awareness to prevent further cases.

The plague, which mainly affects rodents, is transferred to humans through flea bites or direct contact with infected animals. Symptoms can include fever, chills, headaches, and painful swelling of lymph nodes, particularly in the groin, armpits, and neck. In pets, signs may include fever, lethargy, and loss of appetite.

The most recent human case before this was in 2024 involving a resident from Lincoln County. Health officials stress the need to stay alert, especially for outdoor enthusiasts, as the disease circulates in wildlife across the western U.S.

Prompt antibiotic treatment can significantly reduce the chance of severe illness or death from the plague, making early diagnosis crucial. To prevent infections, NMDOH advises avoiding contact with sick or dead animals and keeping areas clean to discourage rodent nesting.

Apart from maintaining cleanliness, using insect repellent when outdoors can further protect against exposure. Pet owners are also encouraged to use flea prevention measures and consult veterinarians if pets show signs of illness.

For anyone experiencing sudden, severe fever or other concerning symptoms, seeking medical attention is essential.

New Mexico Reports First Case of Human Plague in 2025 The New Mexico Department of Health (NMDOH) has announced the first human case of plague for 2025.
