Alcaraz was in control, leading 5-0 in the first set when Sinner, the World No. 1, decided to stop the match just 23 minutes in.

This victory was a significant achievement for Alcaraz, making him only the third Spanish player to win the ATP Masters 1000 trophy in Cincinnati, following in the footsteps of Carlos Moya in 2002 and Rafael Nadal in 2013. This win also marked Alcaraz’s sixth title of the year, including his first Wimbledon championship.

Alcaraz is now the youngest champion at the Cincinnati Open since Andy Murray in 2008. As Sinner left the court, Alcaraz approached him with compassion, highlighting the blend of victory and struggle in sports.

“I really feel for you. I know how tough this must be. You’re a true champion, and I’m sure you’ll come back from this even stronger,” Alcaraz said to Sinner.

Early Control by Alcaraz

From the start, Alcaraz dominated the match, breaking Sinner’s serve early and quickly jumping ahead to 2-0. He kept the pressure on, extending his lead to 3-0 before Sinner managed to show some fight in the third game. However, a mistake gave Alcaraz a solid 4-0 lead, and by 5-0, it was clear Sinner was struggling, leading to a double fault that prompted his withdrawal.

Sinner’s early exit raises questions about his condition ahead of the US Open in 2025, where he is the defending champion. While he is also set to play in mixed doubles with Katerina Siniakova, his participation in New York remains uncertain.

Meanwhile, Alcaraz is preparing to play mixed doubles at the US Open with 2021 champion Emma Raducanu. They will be facing Jack Draper and Jessica Pegula, further adding to what has already been an incredible summer for the young star.

Published By: Sabyasachi Chowdhury
Published On: August 19, 2025

Carlos Alcaraz Wins First Cincinnati Open Title On August 18th, Carlos Alcaraz celebrated his first Cincinnati Open win after Jannik Sinner had to retire due to illness during the final.
