According to a Financial Times report, this startup could be valued at around $850 million, putting it in direct competition with Elon Musk’s Neuralink. This marks a new chapter in the competition between these two tech giants.

Though Merge Labs is still in its early stages, sources say that much of its funding might come from OpenAI’s ventures arm. While no agreements have been finalized, discussions suggest a strong desire to lead in the field of human-machine integration. Altman is collaborating with Alex Blania, the head of Tools for Humanity, which is known for its biometric ID project called “World” and its eye-scanning verification technology being rolled out in the US and UK.

With Merge Labs, Altman is diving into a space that Musk’s Neuralink has been exploring since 2016. Neuralink is working on developing chips that can be implanted in people, allowing them—especially those with severe paralysis—to control devices using only their thoughts. The company recently began human trials and secured $600 million in funding earlier this year, elevating its valuation to $9 billion.

The potential of this technology is huge, with many experts believing it could bring us closer to the so-called “singularity,” a point where human and machine intelligence merge. Altman has spoken about this possibility for several years. In a 2017 blog post, he noted:

“Although the merge has already begun, it’s going to get a lot weirder. We will be the first species ever to design our own descendants.”

At that time, Altman was still at OpenAI with Musk, who left the organization in 2018. Since then, their relationship has soured. Recently, Musk accused Apple of favoring OpenAI in App Store rankings and threatened legal action. Altman responded by claiming Musk uses his platform, X, to unfairly promote his own interests. This exchange quickly escalated into personal insults, with both men leveraging AI chatbots for playful jabs at each other.

This isn’t the first time their rivalry has taken the spotlight. Musk is currently suing Altman, OpenAI president Greg Brockman, and Microsoft, arguing they strayed from OpenAI’s original mission in favor of profit. This case is set for trial in March 2026.

Despite their differences, both entrepreneurs are advancing their ambitious AI projects. Musk is focused on Neuralink and his AI firm, xAI, while Altman aims to compete directly in the brain-computer field with Merge Labs. If Merge Labs gains traction, the competition between these two innovators could reshape not just how we interact with machines but also the future of intelligence itself.

Sam Altman Launches Merge Labs: A New Player in Brain-Computer Interfaces Sam Altman, the CEO of OpenAI, is setting out to explore the exciting field of brain-computer interfaces with his new venture, Merge Labs.
