The main topic of discussion will be the possibility of intensifying military actions against Hamas, including the option of fully occupying the Gaza Strip.

This consideration comes as Israel marks the 20th anniversary of its complete withdrawal from Gaza. What was once an extreme idea — resettling Jews in Gaza — is now gaining traction within the government, especially after Hamas’s violent attack on October 7.

Yitzhak Wasserlauf, an Israeli minister, stated that rebuilding Jewish communities in Gaza would serve as a “historic correction” for past decisions made during Israel’s disengagement from the area in 2005. He referred to the expulsion of Jews from Gaza as both a strategic and moral misstep, enabling the rise of Hamas, which has since attacked Israel with rockets.

Wasserlauf emphasized the need for Israeli sovereignty in Gaza, arguing it would demonstrate that terrorist actions lead to losing ground. “We must not make deals with terrorists. Reestablishing settlements will show that terrorism does not yield benefits,” he asserted.

Historically, Gaza was occupied by Egypt from 1948 to 1967 before coming under Israeli control after the Six-Day War. In 2005, Israel evacuated all military and civilian presence from Gaza, leading to Hamas’s rise to power through violent means.

Wasserlauf lamented that warnings about the dangers of land concessions were ignored, but time has proven them correct. While he acknowledged potential political backlash from both domestic and international observers regarding resettlement in Gaza, he believes Israel’s allies will continue their support.

Brig. Gen. (Res.) Amir Avivi highlighted that Israel’s national security is under pressure from groups like Hamas. He noted the role of U.S. support in shaping Israel’s military strategy concerning Gaza.

Despite internal discussions about Gaza, some leaders feel that resettlement is not currently a priority. Maj. Gen. (Res.) Yaakov Amidror, a former national security adviser, asserted that the immediate goal should be dismantling Hamas rather than pursuing territorial annexation.

Amidror and other experts contend that Israel needs to maintain control over Gaza’s security, citing past failures when authority was handed over to Palestinian governance.

Religious Zionism lawmaker Simcha Rothman voiced that any agreement where Jews cannot live in their historical homeland is unjust but recognized that resettling Gaza isn’t part of Israel’s declared war aims.

Daniella Weiss, from the Nachala Settlement Movement, believes the time is ripe for a renewed Jewish presence in Gaza and claims that over 1,000 families are ready to relocate immediately. She argued that historically, Gaza is tied to Jewish heritage and should not be overlooked.

In light of rising tensions and potential government actions, the future of Gaza remains uncertain, with both resettlement and security concerns at the forefront of discussions among Israeli leaders.

Israel Prepares for Potential Gaza Occupation Amid Rising Tensions Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is planning to hold a meeting with his top security team on Thursday.
