The recent explosion sent ash and volcanic debris soaring up to 11 miles into the sky early Saturday. While the ash cloud covered nearby villages, thankfully, no injuries have been reported. This eruption ranks among the largest since the significant eruption of Mount Merapi in 2010.

Just hours before Saturday’s eruption, another event occurred Friday, with smoke and ash rising approximately 6.2 miles above the volcano, creating a dramatic display of glowing lava and flashes of lightning.

According to Indonesia’s Geology Agency, there was a flow of hot gas mixed with rocks and lava traveling up to 3 miles down the volcano’s slopes. Drones monitoring the area detected significant movements of magma, which triggered tremors captured on seismic instruments.

The agency also reported that volcanic material, including small, hot gravel, was ejected as far as 5 miles from the crater, leading to thick deposits of volcanic ash covering surrounding communities. Residents have been warned to remain cautious, especially with potential heavy rainfall that could cause lava flows in local rivers.

Mount Lewotobi Laki-Laki has been under a heightened alert status since early June, after a significant eruption. The exclusion zone around the volcano has been extended to a 4.3-mile radius due to the increasing frequency of eruptions.

This recent series of eruptions comes less than a month after Bali’s Ngurah Rai Airport experienced delays and cancellations following another major eruption on July 7, which left roads and fields covered in debris.

Indonesia, with a population of 280 million, is home to 120 active volcanoes and is located along the “Ring of Fire,” a major area in the Pacific known for its tectonic activity.

Volcanic Activity in Indonesia: Mount Lewotobi Laki-Laki Erupts Again Mount Lewotobi Laki-Laki, one of Indonesia’s most active volcanoes, erupted for the second consecutive day.
