They expressed concern over the intense demands placed on players, especially bowlers, due to a tightly packed calendar.

In the ongoing series between England and India, there has been just a three-day break between the second and third Tests, and again between the fourth and fifth Tests. This limited time for recovery has raised alarms about player health.

While there was a longer break after the first Test in Leeds, the tight schedule for the other matches has led to significant strain. Stokes, unfortunately, has been ruled out of the series finale at The Oval due to a shoulder injury, and India’s fast bowlers have also faced injury issues.

Reflecting on the situation, Stokes said, “Looking back at a five-match series, the time between games could have been better. We’ve had two long breaks and two short ones—maybe it would help to have consistent five-day intervals.”

Stokes recognized how demanding a lengthy series can be, especially for fast bowlers. He noted, “It’s tough for both teams. Bowlers are putting in a lot of overs and spending lots of time on the field. It makes you wonder whether we needed such long gaps followed by just three days. Maybe four or five days would be better.”

Gill echoed Stokes’ thoughts, highlighting that every match in the series has gone to the fifth day. “It’s significant that all the matches have extended to Day Five, and not just that, but into the final session,” he explained. “It’s rare to see a series where every Test goes down to the wire. So, yes, it’s definitely challenging.”

Gill recognized the balancing act involved in scheduling longer series but emphasized that three-day breaks are insufficient when both teams are competing fiercely. He added, “We get that extending breaks can make the tour longer, but it’s a tough decision for the boards to make.”

As the fifth and final Test approaches, the insights from both captains highlight the growing need to address player workload and ensure well-organized schedules in the demanding world of Test cricket.

Ben Stokes and Shubman Gill Call for Rethinking Test Series Scheduling On Wednesday, England’s Ben Stokes and India’s Shubman Gill spoke out about the need for cricket boards to reconsider how they schedule five-Test series.
