The 26-year-old player joined Essex in June for a two-month contract, but only participated in two first-class matches before returning home.

Khaleel was originally set to play through until late September, participating in six County Championship matches and up to ten List A games in the Royal London One-Day Cup. Unfortunately, he only appeared in two matches, where he took four wickets, averaging 64.50.

In an official statement, Essex expressed disappointment but fully supported Khaleel’s decision, appreciating the contributions he made during his time with the club. The team did not provide further details regarding Khaleel’s personal matters.

Before joining Essex, Khaleel had shown promise with India A, where he took 4 wickets for 70 runs in a match against the England Lions. His strong performance, along with his skills as a left-arm bowler, made him a great addition to the Essex team. He signed in mid-June and joined the squad shortly thereafter.

Though his time at Essex was brief, it was considered a valuable chance for Khaleel to gain more experience in red-ball cricket, especially since Indian selectors are looking for seam bowling options ahead of a busy international schedule.

Having last played for India in 2019, Khaleel has appeared in 11 One-Day Internationals and 14 T20Is, claiming 15 and 13 wickets, respectively. In first-class cricket, he has played 22 matches and taken 60 wickets at an average of 30.13. While he is better known for his white-ball achievements, he has also built a solid reputation in red-ball cricket with his domestic team, Rajasthan.

Khaleel participated in last year’s Duleep Trophy and is expected to be a contender again as the tournament returns to mark the start of India’s red-ball domestic season on August 28. Ending his County stint early may allow him to prepare with Rajasthan or his zonal team ahead of this important fixture.

Khaleel Ahmed Ends County Stint with Essex Early Due to Personal Reasons Essex County Cricket Club announced on Monday that Indian left-arm seamer Khaleel Ahmed has cut short his time with the team for personal reasons.
