She explained that her family shares the same Indian diaspora roots as Mamdani’s father, Mahmood Mamdani, and that they always introduce themselves as African. According to her, the Indian community in East Africa has a rich blend of Swahili influences, and their appearance may be different from those of Indians in other parts of the world. “The idea that Zohran can\u2019t identify as African because of his skin color is quite ironic,” she remarked, regarding the criticisms he faced. Babai noted that many Gujarati Africans she knows also identify more closely with their African heritage while recognizing their Indian roots.
