They also backed the Government’s decision to award him the prestigious Order of the Republic of Trinidad and Tobago (ORTT).<\/p>\n
In a statement, the NCIC acknowledged that there have been some dissenting opinions within civil society regarding both the visit and the award. They emphasized the importance of listening respectfully to these concerns, especially from various religious and human rights groups.<\/p>\n
Despite the objections, the NCIC believes that international relations should be based on mutual respect and meaningful engagement. They underscored that each nation has the right to determine its own democratic processes.<\/p>\n
Highlighting India\u2019s status as the world\u2019s largest democracy, the NCIC pointed out that it is home to over 200 million Muslims and is constitutionally committed to secularism and pluralism. The Council stressed that India\u2019s diverse population plays a significant role in navigating its complex issues through strong institutions and legal frameworks.<\/p>\n
The NCIC acknowledged that Trinidad and Tobago, with its own rich diversity, understands that no nation is without its challenges. They praised Prime Minister Modi’s leadership and his efforts to strengthen ties with Caribbean nations, particularly through platforms like the India-CARICOM Summit, which has opened doors for trade and cultural collaboration.<\/p>\n
