This unfortunate dismissal came as he edged a delivery down the leg side during the last over of the morning session in the opening Test against England at Headingley, Leeds.

Entering the match at number three, Sudharsan replaced KL Rahul after his wicket fell and took on the pressure of playing the final six minutes of a tricky session. The Indian team had just lost their first wicket following a strong opening partnership of 91 runs between Yashasvi Jaiswal and Rahul.

The young batter seemed a bit anxious and was eager to score. He made some uncertain decisions during his short appearance, trying to take quick singles and making hesitant calls with Jaiswal, a sign of a debutant wanting to prove himself. However, on the fourth ball of the last over before lunch, an inswinger from Ben Stokes led to his downfall. Although the ball was wide and not threatening the stumps, Sudharsan attempted to flick it, resulting in a faint edge caught by wicketkeeper Jamie Smith.

Feeling disappointed, Sudharsan walked back to the pavilion without scoring. With this duck, he joined a list of players in Indian cricket history to be dismissed for zero on their Test debut, the first since Umesh Yadav in 2011.

Support from Pujara

Cheteshwar Pujara, an experienced player who handed Sudharsan his Test cap earlier in the day, urged fans and cricket analysts to avoid harsh criticism of the young batsman. Pujara explained, “It was unfortunate to get caught down the leg side. On debut, players are often nervous. It’s natural to want to score runs, but sometimes players make decisions they wouldn’t otherwise make.”

He reassured everyone about Sudharsan’s abilities, saying he believes the young player will bounce back in his next innings. "Let’s give him some time. It’s just one of those things that happen in cricket,” Pujara added.

As the players went for lunch, India was at 92 for 2, giving England an opening to regain their footing in the match. Jaiswal and Rahul had performed well in the early stages, making Stokes reconsider his choice to bowl first. However, the balance shifted after Rahul’s wicket, and the England bowlers started to find their rhythm.

Notable Indian Players with Ducks in Their First Test Innings:

CT Sarwate – 1946

JK Irani – 1947

SA Banerjee – 1948

Ghulam Ahmed – 1948

SP Gupte – 1951

GS Ramchand – 1952

JM Patel – 1955

MS Hardikar – 1958

VM Muddiah – 1959

MM Sood – 1960

BS Chandrasekhar – 1964

UN Kulkarni – 1967

ED Solkar – 1969

GR Viswanath – 1969

DD Parsana – 1979

K Srikkanth – 1981

Maninder Singh – 1982

RGM Patel – 1988

V Razdan – 1989

A Kuruvilla – 1997

R Singh – 1999

DJ Gandhi – 1999

R Vijay Bharadwaj – 1999

A Ratra – 2002

PA Patel – 2002

WP Saha – 2010

R Ashwin – 2011

UT Yadav – 2011

B Sai Sudharsan – 2025

As Sudharsan looks to learn from this experience, the cricket world remains hopeful for his future performances.

B Sai Sudharsan’s Test Debut: A Tough Start B Sai Sudharsan faced a challenging beginning in his Test cricket career, getting out for a duck in his first innings for India.
