This request is linked to the country’s need for rare earth elements and magnets, raising fears about potential misuse of data and exposure of trade secrets, according to a recent article from the Financial Times.

Chinese authorities, particularly the Ministry of Commerce, are reportedly requiring businesses to provide details such as production data and customer lists as part of the export approval process for essential minerals and magnets.

China plays a dominant role in the processing of rare earth elements and in manufacturing magnets that utilize these resources. The Financial Times noted that China has significant leverage over its trading partners due to the widespread use of these magnets in various industries, including electronics, electric vehicles, wind turbines, and defense technologies like fighter jets.

Frank Eckard, the CEO of the German company Magnosphere, stated that Chinese officials are asking firms to disclose "confidential information" to gain export licenses. Eckard emphasized that this process appears to be an official measure rather than an attempt at industrial espionage.

As part of an ongoing trade dispute with the United States, China has implemented stricter export regulations for seven rare earth metals and related magnet materials since early April. This move prompted companies worldwide to quickly secure supplies to maintain production. In a recent agreement between the U.S. and China, former President Donald Trump indicated that Beijing might ease restrictions on the export of rare earths.

Further complicating matters, companies may also be asked to submit photographs of their products, facilities, and details regarding past business transactions, as outlined by the commerce ministry’s guidelines for dual-use exports. Andrea Pratesi, another industry professional, remarked that the requests were extensive and included images and videos showcasing production lines, along with market information and blurred customer order details.

The situation continues to evolve as global companies navigate the complexities of working in this increasingly regulated environment.

Beijing’s Demand for Company Information Raises Concerns Among Businesses Beijing, China – June 13: Western companies are growing uneasy as reports emerge that China is asking for sensitive information from private firms.
