These elections will be the first since a major uprising led to the removal of the previous government.

Since the student-led protest that ousted Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina in August 2024, Bangladesh, a nation of around 170 million, has been grappling with political instability.

While speaking at the Chatham House think tank in London, the 84-year-old Nobel Peace Prize winner emphasized, “There is no way” he wants to continue in a political role. Yunus stated that none of his cabinet members share that ambition either.

During his address, Yunus mentioned he plans to introduce a significant set of reforms termed the “July Charter”. This proposal aims to reshape the democratic framework in Bangladesh, marking a year since the protests that led to Hasina’s exit. He expressed a desire to "say goodbye to the old Bangladesh and create a new Bangladesh."

The charter is being developed by a consensus commission, which is in discussions with various political parties to gather accepted recommendations. Yunus has previously indicated that elections would occur before June 2026, stressing the importance of allowing adequate time for necessary reforms.

In response to pressure from political factions calling for a concrete timeline, he confirmed that April 2026 is the targeted election month. Yunus stated, “Our job is to ensure a smooth transition and that people are satisfied when we hand over power to the elected government.” He underscored the importance of conducting a fair election, noting that “if the election is wrong, this issue will never be resolved.”

Additionally, Yunus is expected to meet with Tarique Rahman, the acting chairman of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party, in London. Rahman, the son of former Prime Minister Khaleda Zia, has been living in London since 2008 after facing legal challenges that have since been overturned. He is anticipated to return to Dhaka to lead his party in the upcoming elections.

Bangladesh’s Interim Leader Muhammad Yunus Declares April Elections LONDON: Bangladesh’s interim leader, Muhammad Yunus, announced on Wednesday that he does not intend to remain in power after the elections scheduled for April.
