Bolton commented on Trump\u2019s remarks suggesting that the ceasefire was brokered through his efforts, clarifying that this was \u201cnothing personal to India.\u201d He noted, \u201cThis is Donald Trump, who takes credit for everything,\u201d when speaking with a news agency.<\/p>\n
The former NSA acknowledged that Trump likely spoke with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and other officials. \u201cI\u2019m sure other countries were also reaching out to see what they could do. It\u2019s typical of Trump that he would jump in before anyone else could take credit,\u201d he explained.<\/p>\n
Bolton added that while Trump\u2019s tendency to intervene may be irritating to some, it\u2019s not meant as a slight against India. \u201cIt\u2019s just Trump being Trump,\u201d he reiterated.<\/p>\n
On May 10, India and Pakistan announced a ceasefire following several days of fierce clashes between their military forces. The fighting had escalated after India initiated a military operation known as \u201cOperation Sindoor\u201d on May 7, targeting terrorist sites linked to groups like Lashkar-e-Taiba and Jaish-e-Mohammed in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir. This operation followed a deadly terrorist attack in Jammu and Kashmir that resulted in the deaths of 26 civilians.<\/p>\n
In response to India’s actions, Pakistan attempted to retaliate using drones and heavy artillery, leading to growing fears of a war between the two nuclear-armed nations.<\/p>\n
Amid this tense situation, a ceasefire was suddenly announced, but not by the governments of India or Pakistan\u2014rather, it came from President Trump.<\/p>\n
On his Truth Social platform, Trump posted about the ceasefire, proudly announcing, \u201cAfter a long night of talks mediated by the United States, I am pleased to announce that India and Pakistan have agreed to a FULL AND IMMEDIATE CEASEFIRE.\u201d He congratulated both countries for their decision, attributing the success to \u201cCommon Sense and Great Intelligence.\u201d<\/p>\n
Trump went on to claim that the U.S. utilized trade negotiations to facilitate the ceasefire and offered to mediate discussions regarding the Jammu and Kashmir issue. However, India firmly rejected Trump\u2019s assertions. The Indian government reiterated that any matters concerning Jammu and Kashmir must be resolved directly between India and Pakistan.<\/p>\n
