This strategic move allows them to access a significant market, where local companies often prefer working with domestic vendors.

Yashas Karanam, the co-founder and COO of Bellatrix Aerospace, explained, "Having a presence in the US helps us achieve our market expansion goals. Accessing the government sector usually requires foreign companies to have a local office or subsidiary. Many US companies prefer partnering with those based in the US, making this presence crucial for growth."

Startups like Bellatrix, which specializes in satellite propulsion, and Digantara, focused on space surveillance, have recently launched operations in the US, setting up local offices and manufacturing facilities. Other players, such as GalaxEye, are also planning to establish offices in the region. The US market accounts for over 50% of the global space industry, making it an attractive destination for startups seeking better funding and growth opportunities.

Lt Gen AK Bhatt (retd), director general of the Indian Space Association (ISpA), emphasized that establishing local entities can help startups fulfill regulatory requirements. He noted that the next three years present a crucial window for Indian companies to enter global markets. "To be competitive on a global scale, startups must validate their technology through testing in space and prove their capabilities with orbital launches," he added.

While India’s domestic space market is growing—thanks to defense applications and increased interest from private investors—it still faces limitations. Bhatt acknowledged efforts to stimulate local demand but stressed the need for more initiatives. The US space technology market is currently valued at $231 billion and is projected to grow to $348 billion by 2030.

Indian Space-Tech Startups Expand to the US In a bid to enhance their growth and tap into the thriving space technology market, more Indian space-tech startups are opening offices and subsidiaries in the United States.
