This incident comes after the BSF constable, Purnam Kumar Sahu, was taken by the Pakistan Rangers on April 23. Mr. Sahu crossed the border by mistake while helping farmers in the Ferozepur sector of Punjab.

The identity of the Pakistani Ranger has not yet been revealed, but he is now in the care of the BSF in Rajasthan. Normally, there is a process for returning BSF personnel who accidentally cross the border. However, due to rising tensions, the Pakistani side has not released Mr. Sahu, leaving the fate of the detained ranger uncertain.

Following this incident, there were reports of unprovoked small arms fire from Pakistani Army posts along the Line of Control (LoC), continuing for the tenth night in a row in various sectors including Kupwara and Baramulla. The Indian Army responded accordingly, but no casualties have been reported as yet.

Attempts to secure Mr. Sahu’s release have included multiple meetings, yet Pakistan has not indicated a timeline for his potential return or confirmed his situation. Mr. Sahu was part of the ‘Kisan Guard,’ tasked with protecting Indian farmers near the border. He reportedly stepped into Pakistani territory by mistake while seeking shade.

India’s government has lodged a formal complaint through the BSF, but officials describe Pakistan’s reaction as vague. Meetings aimed at resolving the matter have not led to any significant progress. It is believed that Mr. Sahu was moved to a facility closer to Lahore.

In a personal note, Mr. Sahu’s wife, Rajani, who is expecting a child, made a trip from Rishra in West Bengal to meet officials in Punjab regarding her husband’s situation.

This backdrop of rising tensions in the region is intensified by a recent deadly terrorist attack on April 22 in Pahalgam, Jammu and Kashmir, which claimed 26 lives, many of them civilians. India has accused Pakistan of supporting the terrorists responsible for this attack, linking it to the Pakistan-based group Lashkar-e-Taiba.

In response to these developments, India has taken several steps against Pakistan, including suspending the Indus Waters Treaty, closing the Attari-Wagah border, and limiting diplomatic exchanges. Furthermore, Pakistan’s military recently tested its Abdali ballistic missile, which Indian officials have called a provocative act, further escalating the situation.

Pakistani Ranger in Custody Following BSF Constable’s Detention Srinagar: A Pakistani Ranger has been detained by the Border Security Force (BSF) along the international border in Rajasthan.
