Director of Public Health, Manuel Carmona, stated, \u201cThese test results show that there is no sign of harmful lead or heavy metal levels at these parks.\u201d He added that, while it’s important for residents to remain cautious in certain neighborhoods identified in a county study, there\u2019s no need to avoid outdoor activities in city parks.<\/p>\n
The California Department of Toxic Substances Control has set a screening threshold of 80 parts per million (PPM), while the EPA’s level is 200 PPM. All tested parks fell below these limits. The highest lead level detected was 51.9 PPM at Washington Park, while Robinson Park’s north ball field had the lowest at 1.6 PPM. Other heavy metals tested were also within safe limits.<\/p>\n
City spokesperson Lisa Derderian confirmed on April 29 that all parks are open for use and no further testing is planned at this time.<\/p>\n
These tests followed a study by Los Angeles County that found higher lead levels in two Pasadena neighborhoods, prompting the city and Pasadena Unified School District to conduct their own tests. Officials clarified that the county\u2019s findings do not necessarily mean cleanup is required but indicate a need for additional testing. The board of supervisors has approved $3 million for soil testing in areas affected by the Eaton fire.<\/p>\n
Pasadena Unified School District began soil testing at its school properties last week, with results expected to be available on their website within four weeks. During this testing, any areas with exposed dirt, including athletic fields, will be temporarily closed to ensure safety. Health experts note that children are particularly vulnerable to lead exposure, which can occur through various means including touch, ingestion, or breathing in contaminated soil.<\/p>\n
