In a thrilling match at the Arun Jaitley Stadium in New Delhi, Hardik Pandya acknowledged the impressive performance of Karun Nair, who put significant pressure on the Mumbai Indians’ bowlers. Nair scored an impressive 89 runs off just 40 balls, hitting 12 fours and five sixes, but his efforts weren’t enough to secure a win as the Mumbai Indians triumphed over the Delhi Capitals by 12 runs.
Delhi Capitals were tasked with chasing a daunting target of 206 runs. Nair partnered with Abhishek Porel, putting together a substantial second-wicket partnership of 119 runs. During a challenging over against Jasprit Bumrah, one of Mumbai’s top bowlers, Nair managed to score 18 runs. He reached his fifty in just 22 balls and seemed on track for a century until he was dismissed by Mitchell Santner.
This match marked Nair’s return to the IPL after a three-year hiatus, and it was also his first fifty in the league since he scored 54 runs in just 26 balls against the Chennai Super Kings in 2018. Following the match, Hardik praised Nair’s aggressive batting, stating that the Mumbai bowlers were struggling to find a way to contain him.
“Winning is always special, especially in tight matches like this. You really need to keep pushing, and it feels incredible. We were running out of ideas on how to bowl to him. The way he attacked our bowlers was impressive,” Hardik noted during the post-match presentation.
Additionally, Hardik commended leg-spinner Karn Sharma for his impactful performance. Sharma was introduced as an Impact Player and played a crucial role by taking the wickets of Abhishek Porel, Tristan Stubbs, and KL Rahul, ending with impressive figures of 3 wickets for 36 runs in 4 overs.
“His performance was fantastic. Coming in and bowling like that showed his determination, especially on a ground like this,” Hardik added.
With this victory, the Mumbai Indians climbed to seventh place in the points table, earning four points with a net run rate of +0.104 after securing two wins out of six matches. The Mumbai team will next face the Sunrisers Hyderabad, led by Pat Cummins, on April 17 at the Wankhede Stadium.
