Visakhapatnam, affectionately known as ‘Vizag’ by locals, is the largest metropolitan area in Andhra Pradesh. It proudly holds titles like the ‘shipbuilding capital of India’ and the ‘jewel of the East Coast.’ One of its shining gems is the Rashtriya Ispat Nigam Ltd (RINL), commonly referred to as the Vizag Steel Plant (VSP). This facility was recognized as a ‘Navaratna’ in 2010, a prestigious status that highlights its significance in the industry. However, its future is currently uncertain.
In 2021, the Union cabinet approved a plan to privatize the plant. Yet, significant protests from the local community led to the suspension of these plans, leaving the facility’s fate hanging in the balance. The situation highlights the strong connection between the plant and the people of Vizag, emphasizing the importance of this establishment not just for the economy, but also for the local spirit.
