Young Cricketer Sam Konstas Reflects on Missing Out in Sri Lanka Series

Australia’s rising star, Sam Konstas, has shared his thoughts about not playing in the current Test series against Sri Lanka. After making a splash on his debut series against India, the young opener was named in the squad for the Sri Lanka matches. However, the 19-year-old could not secure a spot in the playing XI, with the in-form Travis Head stepping up to open the innings alongside Usman Khawaja.

Instead of joining the team in Sri Lanka, Konstas has returned home to participate in the Sheffield Shield tournament, where he is set to play for New South Wales against Queensland. Reflecting on his missed opportunity, Konstas expressed gratitude for having been part of the squad, particularly for the chance to learn from cricketing legends like Steve Smith, Usman Khawaja, and Travis Head.

“I felt very privileged to be in the squad. Learning from top players and understanding their different approaches in various conditions helped me a lot," he said. Despite not being able to take the field, he holds no resentment regarding his situation. Konstas acknowledged Head’s talent, stating, “He is a legend of the game and has been in great form, which is why he opened the batting."

Konstas Shines on Debut Against India

Konstas first grabbed attention during his debut against India in the fourth Test of the Border Gavaskar Trophy held in Melbourne. He played a lively innings, scoring 60 runs off 65 balls, showcasing his bold style by hitting boundaries off India’s fast bowler Jasprit Bumrah.

The young cricketer also had a memorable moment when he exchanged words with Bumrah after receiving a shoulder charge from Virat Kohli. Overall, Konstas left a mark in the series, finishing with a total of 113 runs over two matches at an average of 28.25 and a strike rate of 81.88.

As he continues to grow in his cricketing journey, Konstas remains focused and ready to seize any future opportunities with the Australian Test team.
