Australia Shines in Fielding and Batting as Sri Lanka Struggles on Day 2 of 1st Test

Australia showcased their exceptional fielding skills and strong batting performance on Day 2 of the first Test against Sri Lanka in Galle. After scoring an impressive 654 runs in their first innings, the Australian team maintained their focus in the field during the final session of play on Thursday.

Left-arm spinner Matthew Kuhnemann set the tone early in the match by dismissing Sri Lanka’s opener Oshada Fernando in just the second over. Shortly after, Mitchell Starc achieved a significant milestone by taking his 700th international wicket, removing Dimuth Karunaratne in the fifth over. Nathan Lyon continued the Australian assault by sending Angelo Mathews back to the pavilion, thanks to a stunning catch by Travis Head.

Fielding Highlights: A Moment to Remember

Travis Head was positioned at short leg in the 10th over when he displayed quick thinking and remarkable athleticism. As Lyon bowled a delivery that spun sharply, Mathews attempted a defensive shot that resulted in an inside edge. The ball flew up, giving Head a brief moment to react. In a spectacular move, he leaped into the air and caught the ball with one hand, showcasing his incredible reflexes.

Lyon celebrated joyfully, while Mathews looked on in disbelief as Head confidently appealed for the catch. The umpire promptly confirmed the dismissal, barely needing to check the replays.

The Australians celebrated this moment, highlighting their strong fielding abilities while leaving Sri Lanka in a tough spot.

Sri Lanka Struggles: Day’s End Summary

At the close of play, Sri Lanka found themselves struggling at 44 runs for 3 wickets, still behind Australia by 610 runs.

Earlier in the day, Usman Khawaja impressed by turning his century into a double, becoming the first Australian player to achieve this feat in Test cricket on Sri Lankan soil. Stand-in captain Steve Smith also made headlines with a brilliant knock, surpassing legends Sunil Gavaskar and Brian Lara in the all-time list of Test centuries.

Adding to Sri Lanka’s woes, Josh Inglis celebrated his Test debut with a remarkable century off just 90 balls, marking him as the 21st Australian to score a hundred on debut.

As the match progresses, it remains to be seen how Sri Lanka will respond to Australia’s dominant performance.
