Mohammed Shami Ready to Play, But Suryakumar Yadav and Gautam Gambhir Have the Final Say in Rajkot: India’s Batting Coach Sitanshu Kotak

India’s new batting coach, Sitanshu Kotak, has confirmed that fast bowler Mohammed Shami is fit for play, but the decision regarding his participation in the remaining T20I matches against England will ultimately rest with the team captain and head coach. Shami, who last donned the Indian jersey during the ODI World Cup final in November 2023, has been included in the current five-match T20I series, as well as the upcoming three ODIs and the Champions Trophy.

Questions regarding Shami’s fitness arose after he was not part of the first two T20Is, but Kotak reassured that there are no issues with the pacer’s health. “Yes, Shami is fit, but whether he plays or not is something I can’t determine,” Kotak stated to reporters ahead of the third T20I.

Kotak emphasized the importance of managing Shami’s workload, especially with significant events like the Champions Trophy, which kicks off on February 19, approaching. He noted that captain Suryakumar Yadav and head coach Gautam Gambhir will make those critical decisions. “There is a plan for Shami for the upcoming matches as well as the ODIs, but it’s up to Gautam and Surya to make that choice. Fitness isn’t a concern as they strategize his participation,” added Kotak.

Shami, who underwent ankle surgery in February last year, had been in discussions for inclusion in India’s Test squad for the series against Australia, but he couldn’t regain full fitness in time, despite playing in domestic shorter formats.

As for Jasprit Bumrah, his participation in the Champions Trophy will depend on his fitness status, with the Indian management prioritizing Shami for the 50-over format. Shami’s commitment to recovering and regaining match fitness has impressed the team management, who view him as an invaluable long-term asset. They are cautious with his use to prevent any repeat of injuries like Bumrah’s, so Shami is expected to have a minimal role in the T20Is. However, fans can look forward to his strong return for the ODIs.
