New Delhi: India is set to celebrate its 76th Republic Day on Sunday, January 26. The grand Republic Day Parade will take place in the capital, showcasing displays from the Indian armed forces alongside colorful tableaux representing various states and Union Territories, each celebrating their unique cultural heritage.

As the country gears up for this important day, it’s essential to reflect on the historical and cultural significance it holds.

Why is Republic Day celebrated on January 26?

India gained independence from British rule on August 15, 1947. However, it wasn’t until January 26, 1950, that the country adopted its Constitution, truly embodying its democratic values.

Following independence, a Drafting Committee was formed on August 29, 1947, to create the Constitution. This committee was chaired by Dr. B.R. Ambedkar and included notable members like K.M. Munshi, Gopala Swami Ayyangar, Muhammed Saadulah, Alladi Krishnaswamy Iyer, N. Madhava Rao, and T.T. Krishnamachari.

The draft of the Constitution was presented to the Constituent Assembly on November 4, 1947. After extensive discussions and revisions over the next two years, the Assembly officially adopted the Constitution on January 24, 1950, with 308 members signing two copies, one in Hindi and one in English. This moment was crucial in marking India as an independent republic.

The Importance of January 26

January 26 holds special meaning as it was on this day in 1930 that the Indian National Congress (INC) declared it as "Purna Swaraj," or Complete Independence, during their Lahore Session. They called on citizens to observe it as Independence Day, signaling a pivotal shift away from British dominion.

This date saw the first unfurling of the national flag, symbolizing hope and freedom. Fast forward twenty years, and the Constitution was officially adopted on January 26, 1950, solidifying India’s status as a sovereign nation.
