Tragedy Strikes at Popular Hindu Temple in Southern India
At least six people sadly lost their lives, and many others were injured in a tragic incident at one of southern India’s most famous temples in Tirupati, Andhra Pradesh. The disaster happened on Wednesday night when a large crowd surged forward as devotees gathered to collect free tokens for entry to the Sri Venkateswara Swamy Temple.
Prem Kumar Jain, a spokesperson for the state’s ruling party, expressed his sorrow, stating, "The unfortunate incident has claimed the lives of six devotees. I pray to God to give peace to the departed souls.” The crowd gathered in anticipation of a major 10-day festival that starts this Friday, drawing devotees from across the country.
Authorities had set up counters to distribute these free tokens starting Thursday, but as excitement grew, the situation quickly escalated into chaos with people pushing and shoving to get ahead. N Chandrababu Naidu, the chief minister of Andhra Pradesh, commented on social media about his deep grief over the tragic event.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi also reached out with condolences, saying, “My thoughts are with those who have lost their near and dear ones,” through a post on a social media platform.
Crowd-related accidents, unfortunately, occur often at religious sites in India, especially during significant festivals when large groups gather. For instance, in July of last year, a deadly incident in Hathras resulted in the tragic loss of up to 121 lives during a similar gathering. Another serious incident in 2016 saw 112 people killed due to an explosion caused by illegal fireworks at a temple in Kerala.
This recent tragedy comes just days before another major religious event, the Kumbh Mela, which is anticipated to be the largest religious gathering in history, with up to 400 million pilgrims expected to attend.
