Malawi Celebrates Historic World Cup Qualification

Malawi’s women’s football team has achieved a remarkable milestone by qualifying for the 2027 Women’s World Cup. This success highlights the growing investment in African football during Gianni Infantino’s term as FIFA president, according to Fleetwood Haiya, the president of the Malawi Football Association.

In an interview with Reuters, Haiya pointed out that the advancements in football under Infantino’s leadership have played a crucial role in their success at the ongoing Women’s Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco. Malawi’s impressive run to the semi-finals not only made headlines but also secured their spot in next year’s World Cup, a significant achievement for women’s football in the country.

Haiya expressed strong support for Infantino, saying, “If you look at what he’s achieved for football development in Africa, I’d be surprised if any African association did not support him.” He believes Infantino’s focus on funding for less-developed football nations has been vital for Malawi’s growth in the sport.

The Malawi FA president also endorsed the decision to move away from Infantino’s earlier controversial plan to raise funds through commercial rights sales for the World Cup. He emphasized that any future initiatives must guarantee substantial financial assistance for smaller football associations.

Haiya stated, “I still support Infantino. He is not about personal interests. I remain loyal to him.” He mentioned that countries that truly believe in equal opportunity will also back Infantino, who has shown support for grassroots and women’s football.

With Malawi qualifying for the World Cup for the first time, Haiya believes such support is essential. “What more can you ask for than a president who listens and believes in your vision?” he said.

Infantino’s initial proposal included substantial funding for member associations, which could be a game-changer for Malawi’s football landscape. “An additional $40 million would greatly impact our system,” Haiya commented. He highlighted the country’s struggles with infrastructure, stating, “We have the talent, but we lack resources.”

Haiya also expressed openness to a potential challenger for Infantino in the upcoming FIFA presidential election but is skeptical about finding a suitable candidate who can adequately support nations like Malawi. “Anyone wanting to oppose Infantino should show us their plans for Malawi,” he added.

In conclusion, as Malawi celebrates its World Cup qualification, it stands alongside other nations expressing support for Infantino’s leadership, including Argentina. The future looks promising for women’s football in Malawi, and with the right resources, the potential for success is limitless.
