An 11-year-old boy tragically passed away from rabies in Ontario, Canada, as reported in a medical journal on Monday. The Canadian Medical Association Journal shared that weeks after the boy had an encounter with a bat, he was brought to the hospital.
The boy’s family mentioned that during a stay at a cottage in northern Ontario, he woke up to a bat on his face. After swatting it away, his father captured the bat in a pot and released it. The family did not seek medical help because the bat did not seem to act aggressively and the boy had no visible injuries.
Concerningly, the boy was admitted to a hospital nearly three weeks later after his health deteriorated. Initially sent home, he returned the next morning for further care. Doctors noted that his condition worsened rapidly, and after spending over two weeks in the hospital, he died with his family by his side.
The journal article emphasized the importance of contacting public health authorities if any direct contact with a bat occurs, even if there are no obvious bite marks or scrapes. Rabies is a highly dangerous virus, and if not treated promptly, it is almost always fatal. Proper treatment, however, is usually effective when given right after the exposure.
