Woman Injured in Shark Attack at Sydney Beach
A 30-year-old woman was hospitalized on Saturday after a shark attack at Coogee Beach in Sydney, marking another incident in a disturbing trend of shark encounters along Australia’s coastline.
Emergency crews swiftly arrived at the beach following calls that a swimmer had been bitten. The woman was rescued from the water by bystanders who began providing first aid before she was airlifted to a hospital for medical care.
Authorities reported that she sustained serious injuries to her arm and leg. In response to the attack, Coogee Beach and two nearby beaches were closed to the public.
This incident is part of a troubling increase in shark attacks in Australia. Just days ago, a 35-year-old fisherman was killed by a suspected shark measuring nearly 15 feet while he was spearfishing near Michaelmas Island. Earlier last month, another fisherman, 39-year-old Michael Jensz, also lost his life to a suspected bull shark attack at the Great Barrier Reef.
Shark attacks have surged recently, with officials emphasizing a notable rise in fatalities, surpassing the decade average. Last year, many beaches on Australia’s east coast were temporarily closed after multiple attacks occurred over a short span.
The Australian Institute of Health and Welfare notes that the country typically sees about 20 shark attacks each year.
